A patient who is unconscious but breathing should be placed into the recovery position when you need to care for them, or need to go somewhere and come back. If you suspect spinal injury as well, do not put them in the recovery position unless you have been specially trained in putting them into the special spinal recovery position. The recovery position helps to avoid the patient choking on anything, and keeps the patient in a comfortable position.

Once in the recovery position, check to make sure that the airway is open and that they are still breathing. Keep them warm and reassure them that the EMS are on their way.
